Hey,
I have been having problems with my PC for about a week >:(. Basically when I open up internet explorer I get this message: res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm. It seems I am unable to use any browser at all (i.e. MSN, Opera).
I have taken a few steps to resolve this problem myself 8) including:
1) Nortons virus scan
2) adaware/spybot scan
3) reinstalled internet explorer
4) reinstalled operating system
Reinstalling the operating system temporarily fixed the problem but upon reboot I find myself back at square 1 ???. I have tried contacting the supplier of my PC - HP support, but they have been unable to give a solution yet :o.
PLEASE HELP ME! :'(
Many thanks,
Chris.
-
Hi Chris, :welcome:
One of our techies will be here soon to help you solve your problem.
-
Thanks ;D,
I appreciate any help,
Chris
-
Hi Chris, are you using XP by any chance ?
If you are, turn off system restore and do another virus scan in safe mode, in case something nasty is hiding in there ???
If a different OS please let me know which :)
-
Hi Chris,
Sadly I'm no techie, but I have had this problem myself, and it turned out to be my Firewall blocking internet access. Do you use one, and if so, which one?
-
Hey, thanks for your replies ;D,
To Sandra, yep I use XP, I've tried a virus scan in safe mode too :'(.
To Simon, I have Zone Alarm but I don't think that is the problem :-\
Chris.
-
Did you scan with sys restore off though Chris ?
The reason I am thinking it could be that is that you said it was temporarily ok after you reinstalled and it could be avoiding the scan if its in the sys retore part then re emerging again later ???
-
Yeah I always turn off system restore when I get a virus ???
-
How are you connecting to the internet Chris ?
Have you got TCP/IP enabled ?
-
yep got that enabled and i have tried resetting it too :'(
-
Youre not connecting through a proxy or something Chris ?
Which ISP are you with ?
-
Not sure if I am connecting through a proxy or not :o but not sure, how can I find this out?
My ISP is earthlink
-
CORRECTION :-[ LOL
*Not sure if I am connecting through a proxy butI don't think so, how can I find this out?
-
Are you on BB or dial up ?
Go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections it has setting in there to enable or disable proxy.
If your ISP hasnt given you a proxy setting it probably wont have one but sometimes if an ISP is having problems they may tell you to use one.
Have you looked in the Advanced bit of the Internet Options and ticked anything to do with HTTP etc, there is an option for use with or without proxy, I am not sure what happens if its ticked for proxy and youre not using one ???
-
I've figured out I'm not on a proxy. My connection is dialup :'(
Have I got you stumped yet lol :'(
-
A little at the moment Chris :(
But we may crack it yet though :)
-
hope so lol...or i'll have to go kick bill gate's ass lol ;D
-
Are you sure that you are connected to the net ok, ie can you check your e mails or do you get an error there too ?
-
yeah connected to the net, msn messenger and everything work fine...it's only my browsers that have the problem....i'm on a different pc in case you were wondering lol...
-
I kind of figured that bit out ;)
Do you know how to PING an IP address ?
-
Yeah I can ping 8) lol
-
Ok try pinging this addy xxxxxxxx :)
If it pings ok then try ftp://xxxxxxx in browser and see if you get a log on box up or an error ???
Edited to remove the IP addy ;)
-
it asks me for my user name and password
-
Ok so that means that your internet connection is ok ???
Have a look in the TCP/IP bit again and see what other protocols you can enable and also if you have multiple TCP/IP remove all but one of them :)
-
Worth checking to see that you haven't inadvertently blocked access to/from port 80 with your firewall (I did this the other day and kept getting problems). FTP would have used port 21.
-
I tried shutting down the firewall completely to no avail :'(
Sandra, I think you've pushed me to the limit of my technical abilities lol....kinda lost now lol :-\
-
You havent got XPs own inbuilt firewall enabled by any chance have you Chris ?
-
Nope.... :-\
-
Thought I'd let you know how useful HP have been...
"Ok. I rgert the occurence. Do you have any issue with any other program?"
To which I told them no but I'll have an issue with your company if you don't sort this out!
HMM! >:(
-
Out of ideas at the moment Chris :(
Maybe someone else will come up with the solution when they wake up :)
-
What happens when you type the address: 216.239.59.99
into your browser - this is the IP of google and should produce the standard google front page.
-
Well, Certainly I'll not do better than Sandra. But while searching that problem in other forums, I found one suggestion to setup your internet connection "MANUALLY" (not automatically with the help of the ISP CD). There might be problems in the CD.
So, try going to:
Internet Options - Connection - Configuration (or setup, (the first one)) , and try it manually.
Hope it works.
-
I get a message that says 'internet explorer cannot open the search page...then i get the error message again...
I already set the connection up manually :-\
Any more ideas lol :'(
-
Probably nothing but if you want to download and run tomcoyote.org/hjt/ (http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/) and then scan and post the log here - it was strange to see that error message as that should have taken you directly to the page. Sounds like something is prepending an address onto the URL info.

From searching for other people who have had a similar problem www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/5/lev3/34/pid/585/qid/584353 (http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/5/lev3/34/pid/585/qid/584353) this link may be of some use:

Looking at the HJT log I cant help but notice this line
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:8080
Now that should be the usual address fo the proxy server setup by Zonealarm.
May be worth clearing that key, shutting down/uninstalling Zonealarm and trying to connect. If all well then try re-installing Zonealarm.
BTW which version is it? If 4 then there is a filter option which could also be stopping your access to sites.
Now I'm off to bed (and get screamed at as I wake my girlfriend up :( )
-
ok, thanks for your help Dack...
-
anyone still here :help: who can help? :-\

Hi Chris, and welcome to pc-pals. :D. I haven't read all the posts but I gather you have an HP computer.
I have a pavilion 7890 and I found after I upgraded to IE6 from Windows update, I have similar problems to yourself. I have been all over the place and I couldn't solve problem either. You might want to try HP forums, they are quite helpful.
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/categoryhome.do?categoryId=405
I think you will have to join to post your problem. I have found them to be quite a helpful lot. The HP support lot are useless.
-
Hey...It seems HP aren't as bad as I thought...everything is fixed now...they finally thought of a solution...Lona...I fixed it by changing modems....maybe you need to do this too? Try it and let me know if it works...
Thank you to everyone who has helped tonight...
Happy holidays to you all :thanks:
-
Nice to hear that its sorted :)
I would never have thought of changing the modem as it worked for pinging, messenger and mail.
Did they say why that should have worked that way ???
-
Glad to hear you got your problem solved, Chris. In my case I don't think changing the modem would solve the problem as I have just changed over a couple of days ago to adsl modem and the problem still exists. I have reverted to using Mozilla which doesn't give me any problems so far. :)
-
Yep got her hooked up to ADSL, got her using Mozilla, now all we gotta do is prize her little pinkies off ME.......and she will be one rock solid, water tight, arse kicking Celt......... ;D ;)
-
You just keep your cotton picking fingers of ME. :slug:
-
oooooooooooh your so masterful Lona, we'll convert you one of these days, and then you will bollack us for not trying harder all the other times. ;)
Well if it's the witching shift, it must be past my bed time ;D
nite
-
Before you hop off to bed, Tony, I am on my 12th day of Freemem trial, Cough, Cough. I thought it was freeware? ???
-
I wondered that lona :-\

"FreeMem Standard is available for free to everyone"
You have downloaded the Pro version.
Jeez, you and Shell will send me to an early grave....never mind an early bed ;)
-
Michelle and I went to the link you gave us earlier, Tony. :P. It's not our fault if we downloaded the wrong one. :-[. I hit download for the free one and got the pro one. Maybe they just like Michelle and I and decided to let us have the pro one for free because we are little :adept:'s
-
Well that's a bit naughty of him, linking the Freemem Pro to the Freemem Standard download icon........
I have had a look to see if I had a copy kicking about, but I have no use for it now, because if I build a new PC for anyone I always install 512K of memory at the very least. :soz:
But there are other free progs about on the net.
-
Cor I wondered why my ears were burning so much.
Thanks for checking any Tony. We like to keep you busy ;D
-
Here try this one, I'm assured it is a good prog though I have not used it myself.

-

-
:eeek: my icon on system tray is down to 12. Where's that Mem Monster, I need it now. I have 256K ram, I wonder where it's all gone. ???
