hi all,
i have recently bought a new maxtor 80gig hdd. currently i have a 40 gig, but i want to transfer all my data from the 40 to the 80. my 80 is a slave at the mo. but i have been told that if i clone it with norton ghost the rest of the 80 gig will become unusable?!? is this true, if it is, is there a way round it??

Hi Jon, as far as I know you have to ghost to a partition of at least the same size as the ghosted image is going to be, although I believe that the image will be smaller than your original total files size.
You would then be able to use the rest of the drive as another partition.
Can you tell me what you intend to do with your drive/s ?
That is are you wanting to save your data so that you can wipe and reinstall your os on the 40 gig drive and run that as the master and keep your 80 as the slave ?
I am moving this to general software as its more appropriate in there :)

i want to transfer my files from my 40 to my 80. i am giving my 40 to a friend. if i use norton ghost to transfer the files, will i lose some of the hdd space??????

I dont think you will lose much, its just that you have to have the partition big enough for the ghosted image to fit.
I would be tempted to remove your 40 gig, set the 80 up as the master, partition it how you want it and then install your OS to it, then add your original 40 gig as a slave to it and transfer whichever files you want back to the 80.
That way you wont end up with a gig or 2 spare on your ghost partition which you may find that you would want to use at a later date :)

yer that sounds like a plan... but woodnt it be easier 2 use n.ghost? i have 13.3gb used and 24.9gigs free. how big would i put the partition on the 80? 15gig. + do i make a parition by putting in my xp disk at bootup??? ??? :-\ i jus no that im gonna shag it up, but i really need this 80 wif all my stuff on!!!! :-X

Its definately fool proof to copy everything over from your 40 to the 80 after you install the os on your 80 gig and you can double check before you wipe your original 40 gig.

That may help you or confuse you even more ;)
I think that the main advantage of ghosting your 40 gig would be that you wouldnt have to reinstall your programs again.
The disadvantage would be that you would have all the excess baggage that you undoubtedly have accumulated on now, ghosted to your nice new drive.
Fitting a new drive is an ideal time to clean out all the rubbish and duplicated files that inevitably fill up your hard drive :)

Hi jon996 :welcome:
Norton Ghost will automatically expand the 40Gig partition to fit the 80Gig drive. I have done this many times.
Incidentally, if you have an 80Gig partition with less than 40Gig used, Ghost will also be able to contract the 80Gig partition to fit a 40Gig drive.

all that is on my 80 is win2000?? 2 gigs have been used.

hi all,
i have posted this before i believe, i have an 80gig slave and a 40 gig master. i want all of my files on my 80 and i want to take out my 40. so i got norton ghost and partition magic 8. i have been told that if i use norton ghost to clone my hdd the remaining space on my 80 will be unusable so i got partition magic to sort it out, but i dont really no what im doing and i need some help...thankyou!!!

I think you'll find that Adepts answer (Yes you can do it with no problems) should be the answer you are looking for :)

:believe:i finally plucked up the courage to do it, twas all fine, i took out my 40 and replaced the 80 in and changed the jumpers to master...it was fine until it came to the log in screen and it said that it couldnt verify the lisences of something and it wouldnt log in, just a blank screen with the xp logo on!!!! >:( >:(, and my floppys packed up as well... GREAT :brick:

Oops! XP might think it's a different machine, or that you're trying to use a pirated copy. XP Home Edition, as you may know, is only licenced for use on one machine. You might have to call Microsoft and grovel a bit, so you can use the licence again. Hang on though, until one of the techies sees this. There might be a (legal) way round it, seeing as it's clear you are not using pirated software. ;)
