Title: Reg Cleaner
Post by: DJ on January 06, 2004, 18:51
:hi:

My laptop is running slower and slower every day, I am planning to do a re-install of everything in the next few months.

Until then I thought I'd run a regcleaner. I've never run one of these before so the easier to use the better. Be nice if it was free aswell.  So what is the best one to use - suggestions please  ;D

Apart from taking a backup of the registry is their anything else that I should do to prevent errors?

Thanks

DJ

What is Registry cleaner?
Frequent installation and uninstallation of applications will leave entries in the Windows Registry,
making it grow bigger and slowing down Windows.
Use this utility to clean Registry - the most important part of Windows.

Oops forgot to mention it's a 30 day trial but you can install it then reinstall it after the 30 days.. ;)

Hi DJ.

Just be careful if you use any registry cleaner.  I use  the well known "Regcleaner" (now renamed JT16 Power Tools) and on Sunday it deleted my user.dat file, one of the two files that make up the registry in Win98SE.  My personalised settings had reverted to Windows default installation settings, and programs such as my anti-virus and firewall were no longer working as "The trial period has expired".

Fortunately, although no expert, I am savvy enough to have been able to switch off  the power, start again at the c: prompt and run Scanreg from the c: prompt, to enable me to restore the previous day's registry.  Otherwise I would have been well and truly in the you-know-what.

Just be careful.

I have used Toniarts easyclean for a while and it is easy to use and cleans many other things. It is also freeware.

I've been using RegSeeker which is freeware for a while now and it's never let me down.  It was recommended by the columnist in the "Connected" section of the Daily Telegraph.
