The pc the motherboard came from was a HP Pavillion 423.uk, there aint any audio drivers on the site though

Nah neither of them sites have it, though i will use em in future, some pretty handy downloads there.
I think a new sound card is the best option, im sure i could pick one up for a tenner on ebay.

Ok Scotty, if you go down that route? I had a very simular problem to you with an on board souncard and opted for a PCI card.
went for
This one
and I must admit one of my better buys
when I watch DVDs etc on the pc the sound is out of this world
