Start Up Problem
« on: July 22, 2004, 20:02 »
...well, not so much a problem as an irritation.  Approximately 5 out of 10 times when I start up, I get the error message below, and the following error on my Event Viewer (System):

Event Type:   Error
Event Source:   ACPI
Event Category:   None
Event ID:   4
Date:      22/07/2004
Time:      19:45:27
User:      N/A
Computer:   SLR-V-1
Description:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Simon,

You well know that I don't know better than you. But I found on the web this link which might be useful, and it has some suggestion. To which I preferred this one:

Well I was completely confused by the whole acpi affair when I found out about it!

I couldn't understand why my computer kept hanging and as it was a new one (made
from bits) I thought there was a hardware conflict.  Eventually I saw in the Event
Log that there was a reference to acpi.  I did a search on Google and found some
answers but they all involved reformatting the hard-disk and I knew I didn't want
to do that as it takes such a long time.

Eventually I went on to the Maxtor website and found a reference to this problem,
they suggested reformatting or the following:

Go into Device Manager, select Computer and then select the next Device which will
have ACPI somewhere in it.  Click on Update driver and Select One, then choose Standard
PC.

It seems to have solved my problem -- hooray!

Just wanted to let some people know...

Matt

When I do that, I get this:

and when I click Update Drivers, it asks for an installation CD - would that be the Windows XP CD?  I'd like to find out what the actual problem is, and why, before I launch into unchartered territory with the Windows CD!   :o

I should add, that Windows loads fine, and when I click OK to the error message, there are no ill effects, and everything seems to be running smoothly.
