windows installer problems
« on: September 24, 2004, 21:00 »
???

When I try to do file manipulations, search files, etc. the Windows Installer window popsup with the message "Preparing to Install" and just hangs there. The only way I can get rid of it is to close it from Task manager. I am running Win 2K. What is the problem?

Thank you.

Jim

Sorry that there are no techies around at the moment Jim, but your problem will not be ignored.

Hi Jim, I havent used 2K but I think it may have the SFC.exe like XP has.
I think you may have a damaged or corrupted file in the registry.
If you go to Start and Run and type sfc /scannow and click ok it should check and hopefully repair it if I am right.
You will need have to have your 2K cd handy as it will ask for that to replace any dodgy files from  :)

Thank you Sandra.

sfc /scannow is the correct comand for 2K also, it went through and did something, but did not fix my problem. The problem is still there. Any other ideas.

Thanks again

Jim

Hi Jim,

Not sure if this corresponds your case. But seems that there are similar symptoms if you have (or you are) using the program "Visio 2002". You may have a look here, if not, we have to search somewhere else:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B299259

(Sorry, the link is too long, so, it's not working. We need the help of one administrator or moderator to make it work. If not, you can Copy/Past it in your browser.)

* Simon fixed link.  All you needed to do, Joudi, is put [url] tags either side of it.

Thanks Simon.   :)

Well, I don't want to confuse you more Jim. But till one techie finds the best solution for your problem, you may try the suggestions in this forum:

Please don't be bpthered if I add this link too. It's a similar problem discussion, and it's so long and annoying a little. But anyway, if you don't read it all, you may find worth attention what the concerned person told just at the end:

"My problem was I was cancelling them.  I should have just let them run becuase now that I have done that, everything works ok".

Here's the link:

I promise, I'll not annoy you more with another link.   ;)
