wireless internet sharing
« on: February 10, 2005, 22:30 »
yes, me again! :P this time though, it's something else. ok, yesterday, i got a new pc, and it has both wireless and wire network capabilities(and it's a very nice pc too ;D), and i thought it'd be a good idea to try and share the internet connection that my pc has with my dads laptop(also has wireless capabilities).
anyway, i've got them connected fine, i can share files between them, but i can't for the life of me make my pc share the internet connection over the network.

both have xp, and both cards are compatable(otherwise they wouldn't share files right?), i've tried bridging the connections on my pc, tha didn't work(i actually lost the connection between teh pc's at this time). i dunno what's wrong here. :help:

What kind of network connection are you using Measter. Is it ethernet cable or wireless?

a Wire?? Do you mean a firewire asdl modem?  You will need a wireless enabled modem or router Measter.

I remember when I was setting up my network Sandra suggested an ethernet cable and it was so easy to set up and much faster than wireless.

I shoukd think that its a firewall problem, have you tried temporarily disabling it to see if you can get on the net  ???

ok, i'm obviously not explaining it wery well, so i'll try again, in some kinda diagram.

router >>> standard cat5 ethernet >>> my pc >>> wireless network >>> laptop.

sandra, thanks, i'll try that tomorrow, kinda late now to be trying to get it working.

right, i've shut down zone alarm, and made sure that the windows firewall is offline, and it's not working. i'm still able to access shared folders on my pc through the laptop, so the connection is there, but the internet connection is bieng stopped somewhere.

Looks like you need to run the network wizard again on the laptop as it seems like it has set something wrong in the connect to the internet part  ???

Measter, are you sure your router is cable of running a wireless connection.  Try doing an ordinary ethernet connection and see if it works that's assuming your Dad's laptap has ethernet.

i'm trying to share it through my pc, not our router. i know the router isn't wireless. and yes, the laptop has an ethernet port, but the idea of me trying to do this is so we don't have to have a wire going wherever the laptop is.

You can connect the 2 pc's via wireless, but unless you router has wireless abilites you won't be able to access the internet via your dad's pc.

I think you might need a wireless router, Measter.
