Hi all

I wonder if you can help with another little problem I have .... its my boyfriend ........... is this the couch? hey where is the couch?

oh no I mean't its my b/f's puter ...... okay this is the problem

He has 2 hard drives C and D okay ...... on C is windows 98 which went very weird - kept crashing and not starting up, couldn't fix it, so we thought hey good idea to put xp on it ....... by mistake but maybe it was a good thing lol I installed it on D soooooo we have 98 on D and xp on D ..... (Bit of a mess but)

It was a good thing as he can still access some of his files on C and wants to transfer some of them over but you can't do it in explore .. it does it but then there's nothing on D ..

What we want to do is transfer as much as possible and then get rid of 98 all together.

oh and he can use some programmes that are on C when he is running XP on D (I didn't think this was possible but it is)

Can anyone help out on this cos I'm ....... blonde ! :?

Ok Michelle, I think what you have done is installed XP on D on a NTFS partition.
95, 98 and ME can only see FAT partitions whereas XP can see both types.

What size is your D drive and how much of it is used ?
You may be able to use a program such as partition magic to create another partition on D which you can format as a FAT 32 one and then transfer stuff from your C drive to it when you boot up in 98.
Or if you boot up in XP you should be able to transfer files and folders from C to D anyway :?

I've no idea about partitions, now thats a surprise.

It looks as though you could just drag the files over to D it shows it being there, then when you try to open it it won't.

D: - 17.2gb free 9.64gb

C: - 19.9gb free 16.7gb

So what hapens if you boot up into the XP OS and try and drag from C to D ?
XP should see both kinds of file systems.
Is there anything on D that he really needs ?
If not or if he can save it to another pc or to CD/DVD then wipe and reinstall XP on D and when it gets to the part where it asks you to format select the FAT 32 option, not the NTFS.
That way the 98 OS can use both drives/partitions

oh is it a problem being on the NTFS then ........ ? I'm con fussed :roll:

98 won't start up by the way ..... mind you not that we've tried it lately.

Lets clarify where we are at

You can start the pc in XP ?

XP can see files and folders on both C and D drives ?

But when you try and copy and paste from C to D then D isnt there ?

Or if you select the Move to option from the left hand side of the open folder then it doesnt give you an option to move to a folder on D ?

Yes can start it in XP - Not in 98.

Yes XP can see files and folders on both drives

When you copy and paste it looks like its there but it won't open.

Not sure about the move option, this is normally done in explore and there's no move option.

You can access some files and even play some games on C when in D.

I just cant understand why it wont copy and paste or drag Michelle.
It would take longer but in case its something running on the pc thats stopping it working correctly try booting up in safe mode on your XP OS and see if you can copy and paste or drag in that.
I am just off out to see a computer genius friend of mine in a few minutes so I will ask him if hes any ideas

Because of that is intriguing me; I asked Michelle yesterday through messenger to know what exactly is happening.

She didn't tell a lot, but she said that; it copies them into "D", which is XP. But when she clicks on the copied file (or folder) to open it, while she's on XP ("D"), it doesn't open that file. They look as if they are there, but they don't open.

I still don't understand what's happening! :shock:

All my friend could suggest is that its because of FAT 32 on one drive and NTFS on other but I cant see why that should stop it when using the XP OS

I will try the safe mode option maybe that might work, I like the sound of it.
