With all these free resources available, it makes me wonder why people pay something in the region of £400 for 'professional' graphics software.

I have recently been playing around with photoshop CS 3.
It does seem to have a lot going for it over over other photo editing software and I have only scratched the surface of what can be done with it.
I think its well worth the price I paid for it

Like you, Sandra, most people only ever scratch the surface of these graphics programs.  They don't really need anything sophisticated but they feel that having a more powerful program will make them better graphics designers.  Some open source graphics programs such as Inkscape and the Gimp (which aren't listed on that link ) are quite capable of competing with the likes of Corel X3 and Photoshop.  Ultimately, however, there's no substitute for talent.
