I think you would have a problem when you got near the central core Simon, because of it being very, very hot

nope, you'd have issues with the grav field too... but mostly the heat would be an issue.. plus the inner part of the core is moving around creating the Earth's magnetic field. Though I guess you might be able to go short distances, like across russia....
