The first stage of the switch-on of one of the world's most powerful stargazing systems has got under way.
Seven radio telescopes around the UK have been linked with optical fibres, allowing scientists to probe deeper into the Universe than ever before.
The Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank dominates the Cheshire landscape

yep, stage 1 complete - it'll be a while before they start seeing science results. Since I'm a professional radio astronomer its all rather interesting but e-Merlin will have to soon give up its crown - LOFAR (
http://www.lofar.org/
) is getting bigger and eventually we will have the SKA (
http://www.skatelescope.org/
) - has to be mentioned as I'm working on that.

though I bet e-Merlin will pick them all up... well depending on the observing frequency - all as glorious interference!
