Auto translate added to Gmail
« on: May 20, 2009, 18:21 »
A new tool could spell the end of language difficulties when using Google Mail to communicate with people in different countries.

By integrating the Google Translate tool with its Google Mail platform, the company is hoping to make it easier for people speaking different languages to communicate.

Officially an "experimental feature", Message Translation could be useful to those who have had a holiday romance, the company said.

"This new feature is an integration of Google Translate technology into Gmail, in a step towards automatic email translation between 41 global languages," a Google spokeswoman said.

The feature will "be available to Gmail users around the world," the spokeswoman said, though not everyone will be able to use it immediately.

As with many other innovations introduced to Google Mail, it will be gradually rolled out and you can check if it is available to you by going to your Inbox, clicking on Settings and then Labs.

A list of all the optional features in Google Mail will then be presented to you. Message Translation will appear at the top of the list if it has been enabled in your account.

Google this week showed off some new search features at its annual Google Zeitgeist event.

I've never trusted automatic translators since I once wrote something in French to a French Canadian using Babelfish which got translated into an offer of oral sex.

Believe me, nothing came of it.
