Just so you know I spoke to BT today who have said that this is a problem that affects some computers. The fix is to unplug the modem from the usb port and reboot after that plug it back in and that should resolve the problem although it can happen again :-[ at least I won't have to reinstall the modem everytime. However to to stop it happening I will need to get new usb port
