One well respected astronomer I know claims that the dark ages were caused by a comet colliding with Earth back in 536 AD. LINK

its an interesting idea, but wouldn't the trees have records of this too?

Do we have evidence of where it would have landed, surely we could track it down?

Yes the trees kept the records very intact! You will be able to find his paper in A&G if you care to look it up. I understand it's the most well read A&G paper of all time!
