Topic: installing windows xp Home Edition

I am trying to upgrade from win98 to winxp home edition. installation fails everytime. I had a Microsoft Tech. on phone for over two hrs, without resolving problem. Has anyone had this experience, or any advice. I keep trying on my own appears to be installing forever, then fails. Seems to be different error msg. every time.

Could you tell us what error message you get? It would be a start to resolving the problem  8)

We'll need a few more clues than that Don And frankly if Microsoft's techies can't solve your problem, I doubt if we will be much help

Can you give us a flavour of the kind of error messages you are getting? Was the original W98 installation working OK before you upgraded?

Usually its best not to do an upgrade install of XP as, to use a technical phrase, it tends to play silly buggers

XP seems to check for the applications/hardware you have installed in 98 and uses that as the default way of installing. Problem comes when you've had different hardware installed and 98 still has the bits lying around.

One way you may be able to get it installed is by booting up the copy of 98 in safe mode, doing the usual windows key + break combination (or right clicking on my computer and choosing properties) and deleting the items from the computer properties that ar no longer in your system (usually extra graphics cards, sound cards etc.)

Another error I was encountered was that the IDE cable connecting the computer to the CD rom drive was too long and it caused random errors on copying the files over.

win 98 was working fine and first installation of xp went well, but had a problem and uninstalled xp. when started to re-install was when I couldn't MS Techie was making progress but after more than two hours I had to leave. I probably should go back to him, since I have case #. Whatdo you think?

Yes Don, I think it would be best to let the MS Techie sort it out for you. They will be in a better position than us to help
