I really need help! I use win 98, and my resources are at about 40%. when I use msconfig, and check selective, uncheck those items I want out, re-boot my computer, within a few seconds of restart they come back. There seems to be no save command for changes.

I just checked my Win98 machine. When you make changes to the settings in msconfig, it should ask if you wish to reboot as you press Apply or OK. AFAIK that's when it saves the changes.

When you press OK, Apply is implied Sandra. It is on my W98 anyway

Hi Don,

I'm sure the techies will be back to help you soon, but I assume that you are selecting "selective start up" on the general tab ? Although on mine which is ME it changes automatically I think, so you could just check that yours has.

Do you want to get rid of the startup items permanently or are you just trying them out to see if it makes a difference to your resources problem Don?

If you want rid of them permanently, the best way is to uninstall the software.

Another way is to edit the registry directly. This is effectively what msconfig should be doing. If you aren't experienced in registry editing, this can be dangerous though.

Thank you, I am afraid of the registry, not enough experience. I just want to disable them, but be able to enable.

First question is what are you trying to remove from the startup?

A lot of software is inter-related so that it will check it is intalled correctly and 'fix' any errors. By switching one program off you may be leaveing another dependant one enabled and so it will add the first one back in.

If you download and run Hijack this from

Select Scan and then post the log it creates on here - this will allow us to see what is trying to run.

but don't try and fix anything yet as it allows you to change the registry (which can cause all sorts of problems).
