Do many members partition their HDD's ?
« on: January 15, 2004, 00:00 »
seeing as I have Broadband ;D I have been having a sort out with my PC. I have two HDD's a 30GB and a 40GB. I have partitioned the 30GB into C: 7GB [OS/Progs] D: 3GB [My Data] E: 19GB [Photo, Music and Films folders]

The 40GB HDD is setup the same as the 30GB HDD, as a backup drive in case the 30GB one fails. With the exception of another 10GB partition on the 40GB HDD which I use to store imaged files of C: and D: With E: drive media files copied on to the corrosponding partition on the 40GB HDD.

I keep a brand spanking clean image of C: drive as was loaded with current security updates. That way I can always go back to a nice clean install. Plus I update another image of C:drive [complete with Anti Vi software installed] on a monthly basis. I also image My Data files weekly, and if I go on holiday I take the 40GB drive out of the PC, just in case some one breaks in and nicks my PC.

So all in all, I think I'm covered for virus or burglar attack, and or HDD failure

I only have a 20gig h/d but it's partitioned into c & d drives. I have broadband  ;D so I leave c: at about 2 gig for the o/s & partition d: as the remainder. Fdisk works ok to do this, but you will "loose the lot", you may get away with "partition magic". Are you prepared to do a format, fdisk & then reinstall your o/s to c: ?

I use PowerQuests "Partition Magic" and their "Drive Image" Software, they are quite easy to use. But like I say, you cannot beat having your drives imaged on a seperate HDD, just in case you do cock up.   ;D

My C: drive complete with programs has 3.75Gb used of the 7GB avaliable.

Well I'm off to bed so I'll bid you a good Nite Nutter  ;D
