File opening problems in Mozilla
« on: January 09, 2004, 21:52 »

Can anybody tell me what causes files not to open under certain circumstances in Mozilla ? When I try downloading anything though Mozilla manager and try opening it or just try opening a file through Windows Explorer it doesn't want to know. Also if I try opening a file  from an email such as jpegs. I quite often download jpegs and this commmonly seems to be the sort of file I have problems with.

Thanks.

Is it just mozilla?. or any browser? (ie6 ect).

I tihnk it may be " finger trouble" on your part :). Do you "open" them or "download" them?

Hi, joe_90.  :welcome:

I use Opera, although I do have Moz installed for my son's use.  Unfortunately, he is out at the moment so I can't ask him if he has similar problems, but my first thought is that it may be that you may need to associate jpegs with Mozilla.

There is quite a Moz following on this site and I'm sure someone familiar with Mozilla will be along shortly to help you, so stick around.  In the meantime, it may be helpful if you could give details of your operating system and of any other browsers you have installed on your computer.

Hi Joe,

What actually happens when you say 'it doesn't want to know'?  Can you be more specific?  Do you get an error message of any kind, or does literally nothing happen?  Is Mozilla set as your default browser, and do you know which version of Moz you are using?

If you go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > System, you should get the screen below, and most of the boxes should be ticked, especially the ones for the files you are trying to open.

Come back to us with more info, if you need more help.   :)

Thanks all.
Sorry...being more specific I'm using Windows 2000. I use Mozilla ( or try to ) as my default browser, I previously used Explorer and still have it accessible but someone recently suggested I try Mozilla coz they preferred it so I'm giving it a try.  Most of the settings on the
system preferences are there except for the ticks in the BMP and ICO boxes so presumably the fact that there is a tick in the jpeg box means I should technically be able to open the files, the fault lies somewhere else. Actually now you mention it Simon there does seem to be a split second
of activity when I click on the file, there's a fleeting glimpse of what could be the contents of any file but that's all. I'm using version 1.5 of Mozilla.
 :)

OK, try this Joe.  Right click a jpeg you want to open, and choose Open With > then the program of your choice.  I have mine open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, or you can choose Mozilla or Paint Shop Pro, or whatever graphics viewer / editor you have on board.  If you select 'Choose Program' from that box, you can select a program and tick the box to have all files of that type open in that chosen program.

Come back to us if you're still having problems and hopefully somone more technical might be able to help.

:good: You could use "copy to folder" & see if it downloads.

You aren't "behind the door" on stuff are you Simon.

P.S, I use  Moz firebird 0.7 so the info I give may not be exactly accurate, but "near enough"   :-\

Hi joe_90,

and welcome, I'm a Mozilla fan and I also use W2K Pro. Now what I found was Moz 1.5 for some reason hangs on my set up. Don't ask me why, I tried it once it came out as non beta, and again just a week or to ago, to see if it was any better, nope.

So I'm using Moz 1.4.1, and its fine solid as a rock. So if I were you, I would uninstall first the 1.5 and install the 1.4.1. Dont worry you will not lose any of your Mozilla settings, like Bookmarks or saved passwords, or email settings. I use the Moz mail email program as well, instead of that MS crap  ::)

Here's a link to Moz 1.4.1 http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.4.1/

Funnily enough, I find 1.5 works fine, but as 1.4.1 and 1.5 are virtually identical, the best thing is to use the one which works better on your machine.

I hope Joe comes back to us to let us know what happened.  My guess is this is more of a file association issue.   :-\
