Can't get connection
« on: February 22, 2004, 16:01 »
One of my old computers has been returned to me for re-distribution to someone less well-off and I'm trying to get a dial-up connection for her.  I'm using the correct phone number and it dials up fine but it won't open any Internet pages or go to Microsoft Updates.  My son had this particular machine last (it's a 1200MHz)and the only thing he's removed is the Broadband connection.

I had this problem a little while ago Clive and it was just a case of adjusting my security settings for the phone number with your ISP.  I take it you're trying to connect to btopenworld  ;)
My goal in life is to become half as good a person as my dog already thinks I am

Thanks GK,  I'll take a look at that.  No, it's actually Supanet as it's already set up for that particular ISP.

The security settings were OK, but I've restored all the default settings and it now seems to be thinking about calling up a page whereas before it failed immediately.  Unfortunately it still comes back with "Google not found".

Try disabling the firewall temporarily Clive and see if it connects ok.
If it does its the firewall needs configuring  :)

It might be a good idea to remove all the applications from the Firewall and start again, Clive.

I tried disabling the firewall (Zone Alarm) but it makes no difference.  The modem is definitely connecting as I can hear the handshake.  Even after I leave it connected for a few minutes I can hear the babble if I lift the phone receiver.

Have you been into ZA and removed Internet Explorer from the programs list, so it asks for permission next time, Clive?  Also, is it just the Internet, or can you not get any e-mails either?

I think that the problem has been caused by Ad-Aware as I ran a scan on it and found 51 pieces of spyware which I deleted before attempting an Internet connection.  I'm going to try System Restore first and if that doesn't work I'll do a re-install.

Right, System Restore has solved it!  I believe that the problem was caused by Nero installing a file in the registry which was subsequently removed by Ad-Aware.  This is a repeat of the problem I had on Mrs Clive's computer a year ago, but System Restore was unable to cure it on XP.  This particular machine is running Me.  Thanks for all the suggestions!
