Presario cooling system
« on: May 10, 2004, 19:14 »
Hello everybody at PC-Pals,

I have some questions concerning my pc, Compaq Presario 2710, I hope some of you can help me, the people at the Compaq helpdesk certainly CANNOT or simply do not want to. I have a problem with the cooling system (don't know the exact tech.term) of my laptop, switching on all the time, and making a very, very annoying sound. In a typical situation, this cooling system switches on when I'm using for example a Word file larger than 6 pages, a Excel file larger then 1 (one) page, when I open a document via Acrobat reader, when opening Flash-websites etc. Any actions that 'demands' something from the pc makes the cooling system go nuts. The problem is that there is only one way to stop the noise: turn off the machine completely en start all over again. Does anybody have an idea what is going on, can I expect that a 2200 dollar pc is able to open a Word document SILENTLY. (The cooling systems switches on also after 20 minutes without any actions, not possible to calm it down even then). What is the problem? Memory? Virus? Broken cooling system?
Thanx for any suggestions!
Albert

Hiya Albert, and  :welcome:

My laptop - a Samsung VM8000 - does exactly the same thing.  That's because it's meant to.  As the CPU does more work, so the hotter it gets.  And the hotter it gets, the harder the fan works.  By working in this way, it draws less power when it isn't essential.  As soon as your fan stops doing that, start praying!

Thank you for the reply, Rodders,

now, I understand that this cooling is essential for the system, the problem here is that when I just bought the pc, I hardly never heard it, while now, even when processing very 'light' tasks, the system seems to have problems. As I said, even opening a Word file can cause the cooling to switch on, hardest level (of 3) and it doesn't 'calm down' even when I close the document, and all runing applications. The taskmanagers indicates a low % of memory-use, etc. The problem seems to get worse and the noise does not allow me to work anymore. Any suggestions on possible failures?
Greetings, Albert

It may be that the airflow around the CPU is now being obstructed in some way, e.g., dust, fluff, a family of fieldmice, etc.  You can usually get to it through a panel in the base of your machine.  A good clean wouldn't hurt it anyway.  Do please RTFM before you go delving inside though!
