Non-loading XP
« on: May 19, 2004, 12:48 »
Hi all (again)

Turned off the PC normally yesterday and when we went back to start up it goes to a screen that gives a four options:-

1. Safe Mode
2. Safe Mode with Networking
3. Last known good Configuration
4. Start Windows normally

On hitting (4) it goes to the XP splash screen and then continually recycles. After showing two green bars on the loading bar.

Won't go into 2 + 3 at all but loads into Safe Mode have done a virus check (Norton 2002 and Spybot, Ad-aware, Spyblaster) all are latest versions and updated day b4 and all come up with diddley squat.

Anyone any ideas PC not been moved and we connect to the net with broadband NTL.

Thanks in anticipation.

DB

PS also has Zone Alarm running

I cant think why its suddenly started doing that DB but if you start up in safe mode, then go into control panel/system properties/advanced/startup and recovery settings then untick Automatically Restart in the System Failure bit that will either allow it to start normally or at least halt on a BSOD that will give you a message that we can possibly help you to interpret to find out what has gone wrong.
Or again in safe mode if you go and have a look in the error log, that may give you an idea as to whats causing it too  :)

Ok DB, if a pc runs ok in safe mode but not in normal wondows its usually because of a problem when it loads either some drivers or a program or some hardware that arent loaded while in safe mode.
This is why it runs ok in safe mode as it has minimum drivers and programs loading.

The error message you get is possibly related to some usb devices, according to this article :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;327863&Product=winxp

I would suggest that you disconnect any usb devices that you have which arent needed when you initially start your pc and if it runs under normal windows then add them one at a time and see if you can find out which one causes it to crash.
It may be something as simple as a driver for that device needing reinstalling, hopefully  :)
If its not that then another thing to try would be to run MSCONFIG from the Start/Run box and go to selective startup and untick any programs that arent needed on initial startup in case one of those is causing the problem, although my moneys on a USB device at this stage  :)
