wireless networking on BT Broadband
« on: June 13, 2004, 21:12 »
Recently had BT Broadband installed, but recently, I've treated myself to Netgear's DG834G wireless modem/router. But I can't get it to work!! Gone through the set up procedures to the letter, but for some reason it doesn't "see" the broadband connection. When I enter set-up procedure, and it tries to access the website so-to-do, i get "page not available" coming up each time I try. Could it be something to do with the fact that I'm on the cheapest "Basic" package?
I get no problem when I go back to the original BT usb-connected modem.

Hi and :welcome:

Have a look at this page and see if it helps  :)

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101210.asp

If it wont let you access the router as normal you may have to follow the reset procedure and try again.

Hi, and

Hopefully a techie will be along to help you soon, but as a shot in the dark, has the DG834G got some sort of Firewall built in that you might need to configure?
Many thanks to all our members, who have made PC Pals such an outstanding success!   :thumb:

I have the older DG824M wireless modem and router - have to say I went through the setup wizard that comes with it and it installed no problem.  I am with Force9

What exact errors or processes are occuring?

DJ

Hi DJ,Sorry I've taken this long to reply, been ill,off work today,so i can take the time.I,ve had my main pc station to "see" the router via its on-board adapter card, but my son's desktop and laptop can't connect. He has a usb connected netgear wg121 module, comes with cd-rom software, downloaded successfully, even reckognises the router's signal, and says it to be an "excellent" connection. But then how does one get on the net?
What do you click on or open to gain access to the net. I open I/Explorer, click on a destination, but nothing happens, it times-out.
Also,as a matter of interest, do you bother to unplug the router when you're done at night? It gets quite hot! or do you leave it on constanntly?

Can you confirm that you main PC is working through the router as normal, its just getting the second pc and the laptop to connect that is causing the problem ?
Are the second pc and laptop both on wifi or is the pc on ethernet ?
Can you ping the router ok from all 3 as that article I posted earlier suggested trying ?

As far as leaving the router switched on, they are designed to be left on, mine has been on continuously since september last year barring an occassional reboot when I have had to configure a Virtual Server on it to open specific ports.
Mine does get very warm but appears to be ok  :)

I just open internet explorer and am connected to the internet. Sounds as if the network isn't set up correctly.

Are the workgroup names on all computers the same? Not too good at networks - so maybe a 'techie' can help more.

Yes my router is on constantly, but hooked onto a wall so does not get too hot - don't put it in a confined space!!

And make sure you have set up WEP encrytion or the like to stop your neighbours sharing your connection!

Hope you get it sorted soon,

DJ

According to this :

http://www.bt.com/homenetworking/index.jsp

It says :

No more queuing. No more waiting.
With a home network you can share your broadband connection with up to 10 home computers - so everyone can get online without the family squabbles.

You don't have to be a computer whiz, and there's no need to rewire your house. A home network incorporates a modem, router and hub to connect your computers together so you can share one broadband connection.

When all your computers are connected, you can share files without transferring them to disk, play shared games and even share equipment (e.g. there's no need to buy more than one printer).

Please note: This service is not available with BT Broadband Basic, all other BT Broadband packages are compatible.

So it looks like the package you are on doesnt allow it  :(

Maybe a quick call to BT will confirm this before we delve any deeper into the problems you are having  :)

Just because the package doesn't allow it doesn't mean it can't be done Sandra ;) I would say that it is a Terms & Conditions restriction rather than a physical or software restriction on the DSL line. If one PC connects, then they all should.

As for contacting BT; is it wise to tip them off?  :o

rhyd.mathias can your PCs see eachother across the network? If you look in Network Places on each PC you should see the names of both PCs listed. If not may be a configuration problem with the PC that wont connect.
