My 1st serious upgrade!
« on: June 17, 2004, 10:10 »
Hi all.
I'm going to take the plunge and do a serious upgrade on my computer.  The problem is, I don't know if all the items are compatible with one another.  Here are the specs :

Mobo:       MSI K7N2 Delta-L SKT A 8xAGP DDR400 Nforce2 6ch Sound LAN USB 2.0

Proc:       AMD ATHLON XP2700+ 333MHZ FSB 256Cache CPU - Thoroughbred - OEM

Video:      XFX Geforce MX440 AGP8x 64MB DDR TV-Out Retail Box

Case+psu:   eBuyer KG-888-B 400watt Atx Case In Blue With Front USB/Audio/1394

All of these items are from E-Buyer and it all comes to (including VAT + Postage) £165. I have a £200 budget.

The CPU heatsink and cooler is from Quietpc.com and is a Nexus AXP-3200 AMD Copper Plated Cooler at £22.

Hard Drive: I already have a Maxtor Diamondmax 120gb 8meg cache (IDE 133)

Ram:        I already have 512 Mb of PC2100 DDR

Optical drives are a Pioneer 106D DVD writer and a Sony DVD-Rom drive.

I have all cables and fans (including floppy drive)

Any advice on the above would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance

Scotia

I am not sure about the rest but you may have problems with a 266 pc2100 DDR with a 333 FSB Athlon, I couldnt get a 2500 Barton 333 to run with 266 pc2100 and had to get 333 pc2700.
You would lose out on performance by using slower ram even if it did work with it.
Also I would see if you could stretch to a 128mb GFX card as 64mb is possibly going to give you problems with some of the newer games or applications before a 128mb one would  :)
