Avant Browser
« on: June 22, 2004, 14:57 »
Has anyone tried Avant?  I've read some very good reports about it in today's Daily Telegraph.  Amongst other interesting functions, it has a Flash filter - but would that cause problems for me on the forum?  There are more details here:

Sounds ok Clive, of course it would have to have some way of allowing Pals site to be excluded from this feature :

Quote
Flash Animation Filter: More than 85% of all flash animation on web pages is advertising. These flash files are pretty large, and normally take up to 90% of the size of the page you're visiting. With Avant Browser you can save this bandwidth by blocking the download of these flash files with just one easy click. Avant Browser also provides options to block downloads of pictures, videos, sounds and ActiveX components. With these options users can control their bandwidth and speed up page loading.

Otherwise you would miss all of the nice sigs that are on here  :(

I've downloaded it, and the bad news is that it still shows all the sigs.   ;D  Still, there are lots of very nice features which I'm impressed with.  One of the most useful is that it will re-open all the webpages you were using when you shut the computer down.  I usually have around 6 screens open on a permanent basis and it's a chore to open them all up each morning, especially if they are password protected like PC-Pals and my e-mail account.  Avant remembers passwords for you just like Mozilla.

I also like the Roboform plug-in which will automatically fill in online forms if you submit a password.

Very early days yet, but full of Eastern promise.   ;D

kinda wish i would have found this thread when it was first posted.

I dled it about 5 months back as an alternative to mozilla and ie. The only thing that got annoying was it was more of an application than an actual browser. All your browser windows were in one prog window instead of having other independant windows. I would exit out of avant by accident when wanting to close a window.

On an educational note i found out where the name avant came from in an art history class im taking now at college.

It comes from the term avant-garde which referred artists or writers whose ideas are ahead of their time. They were a unique group of artist in around the 19th centry and it kinda evolved into a catchphrase. I thought it was a real cool little fact. Kinda shocked me when i was reading out of my AH book

I must say that I have bonded with it very quickly Bob.  It's still a little strange not being able to Alt/Tab to view pages, but the tab system is much better.

Ive installed, run, and uninstalled Avant. Its just too much hassle because i do all my coding for the IE browser. It was an excellent alternative for Mozilla, but when i uninstalled it i noticed a few of the options in IE had been changed. Eg. i can no longer edit the favourites, not edit their icons...

I might try it again at some point, but at the moment its just not worth it...

AFAIUI Avant is just the IE core HTML engine, with a fancy wrapper around it.

Which means that it is probably vulnerable to all the usual Microsoft bugs.

I'll stick with Moz thanks very much ::) :splat:

A loyal supporter!  I think you're right, Sean, and the same goes for Crazy Browser, IE2, and probably others.

 you lot!   ;D  I know it's just a Mozified version of IE with lots of additional bells and whistles attached, but I'm enjoying it.  I'm usually very reluctant to change a comfortable old pair of slippers so if I say Aavant is good you just have to believe me.   8)  I'll let you know soon enough if it all starts to go horribly wrong.   :P  :P

What I don't understand is, you got Mozilla, then didn't use it, and now you have Avant, which, correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't have anything much Moz doesn't have, but still has all the vulnerabilities of IE!  ::) ;D
