Topic: Network query

HI,

I have a friends laptop at my home at the mo, and there is quite alot of data i'd like to transfer. I thought i could just use my cat 45 cable to connect the two, but it turned out i needed a hub to do this. Is there anyway of connecting the two to transfer data without any other hardware? exceot cables, obviously. If there is type of cable to i need and how do i go about setting it uP? we do both have network cards;

I assume you mean a cat 5 ethernet cable ?

If you have an ethernet card in each pc then you can definately set up a network to transfer data from one to the other.

You may have a "Straight" cable, this is usually used for a router or hub to pc. For a pc to pc network you need a "Crossed" cable.

If at least one pc is running XP then just run the network wizard and select the file and printer sharing option, if both pcs are on XP run the wizard on the second, if ones on a different OS then let the network wizard of the XP machine make a floppy to run on the second one.

Thats the only reason that I can think of that your present cable isnt working, provided the network cards are enabled and installed correctly on both pcs

HI,

One is my pc amd one is my friends laptop. Both are up to date with all windows updates and both have working installed ethernet cables. One thing that occured to me that might be a problem is with both cards previously being configured to access our university network, would i need to reconfigure them to access eachother???

Sorry i did mean a cat 5 ethernet cable!!! i've been using it to run on my university network, so i'm guessing my cat 5 is a "straight" cable and i need to invest in a "crossed" cable to connect both comuters???

i;ve been looking on the internet, can't seem to find what i need on ebuyer or dabs, do you reckon i will be able to get a single short one on the net, or will i have to go to a local computer store?? or would a cat 6 do wich is a;; i can seem to find!

Any pc shop or even those overpriced places like pcworld would have crossed ethernet cables.
The one you used for the university network would almost certainly be a straiight cable so I am sure thats your problem.

You would need to run the Network Setup Wizard on your pc and laptop again as you are setting up an "Ad Hoc" network between the two unlike the university one was.

It should only take a few minutes, run the wizard on the one that connects to the net first and select "This computer connects directly to the internet. The other computers connect through this computer"

Then run the wizard on the other pc/laptop and select the option "This computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway or through another computer on my network"

Remember to select file and printer sharing at the appropriate points and that should be it

It shouldnt do, but I dont think theres a "No net access" option.
So just set it up as if one connects to the net and the other connects to the net via the first pc.
Once the wizards been run on both pcs you should be able to see both pcs in the Network Places/View Workgroup Computers.

If you cant then its probably the firewall on one or both pcs thats blocking it, if this happens then see if theres a setting to allow you to add the IP of the other pc to each one. You can see each PCs IP by going into Network Connections and just left click the LAN and it should have the IP at the bottom of the menu on the left under Details.

It will set up shared folders on both pcs on C by default but you can share any other folder on either pc by right clicking and selecting the Sharing and Security setting. Tick the Share this folder with other users on the network and also the box below that says Allow Network Users to Change My Files.
This last option allows you to send from one pc to the other, if you dont tick that one then each pc can only copy files from the other pc to itself which can be a pain at times
