Firewall provider Kerio's new owner says it'll keep providing a free firewall for home users.

Anti-spyware company Sunbelt Software announced the purchase of Kerio today and promised to continue supporting Kerio free firewall users and to "continue Kerio's tradition of providing a basic free version for home users".

In October Kerio said it would discontinue its personal firewall software from 31 December to focus on its products for business users. Sunbelt looks set to revive the free software once the acquisition is completed at the end of December.

The Kerio Personal Firewall will be rebranded the Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall. Until then the company said that the current Kerio free firewall could still be downloaded from Kerio website.

Alex Eckelberry, president of Sunbelt Software, said: "In today's increasingly complex internet threat environment, a high quality firewall is critical for both the home and enterprise networks. The Kerio firewall is a well-known leader in endpoint security for small business and consumers."

"We are thrilled to have it as part of our product line and Kerio users should know that we are firmly committed to continuing to provide world-class support for the product," he added.

Avoid it like the plague.  I used it for a while and had so many problems with it that I stopped using a firewall at all.  To put it in a nutshell, with Kerio free on my system, I would have been able to do more on my PC with the plug pulled out of its socket.

Total Trash, with a capital T.

Cheers, Sam.  :D

By the way, I'm beginning to like Linspire and this year's project will be to have at least one of my PCs Microsoft free.  Unfortunately, I can't go the whole hog because I have to use virtually all the applications in MS Office 2003 for work, and I'm becoming so addicted to MS Train Simulator that my son has threatened to buy me an anorak for Christmas!

I am like you, though, locked into using windows just to do some meaningless tasks...oh and play games! :-)
