Windows resets my speaker settings when I reboot
« on: February 03, 2006, 16:58 »
Whenever I reboot my PC windows seems to reset my speaker settings. If you go in to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices Under the Volume tab there is a section for the Speaker Settings. Click the Advanced button and you can change your speaker setup.

The setting in the drop down box never actually changes after rebooting but the setting clearly changes because the sound is quieter. To fix it I have to select another speaker setting ie Desktop Speakers, click apply, select 5.1 surround sound, click apply and then it is back to normal. However, this is extremely annoying when I have to do it every time I retart my computer! Has anyone got any ideas on how to stop windows from forgetting this setting? Any help would be much appreciated. Just to help you out a bit:

OS: Windows XP Home (same problem for Pro as well)
Soundcard: Creative Audigy Platinum
Speakers: 5.1 digital speakers

If you need any other specs let me know :)

Hi McClane and :welcome:

Does everything else about the soundcard work ok ?

I have had problems before with drivers on Creative 5.1 cards (soundblaster live and audigy) which have been fixed by using Creatives own drivers, not XPs own.

Do you know which drivers are installed, the Creative ones or XPs own ?

Thanks for the welcome :D

I'm using Creative drivers (AUD_EAX4DRV_031031). I haven't got any of the other Creative stuff installed though, like the Audio HQ or Media player.

I wonder if you need the Audio HQ to work with Creatives drivers or XPs drivers to work with the windows volume control properly.
You may need the relevant driver for the particular volume control program  :?

Can you install the Audio HQ to check ?

I have downloaded what I thought was Audio HQ a while ago but it might be an update. It won't let me install it without the original Audio HQ being installed from the CD. Problem is, the original CD is back at my parents place and I'm at uni :( I'll have a look around on the net and see if I can download Audio HQ, creative don't seem to have it on their site anymore :/
