Hi all,

I was trying to set up a small network (essentially just for Internet connection sharing) last night and couldn't manage to do it.

I set up the XP machine no problem with the wizard and made a set up disc for the Win 2k laptop. I tried to run the disk on the 2k machine but it said it could only be used on 98/ME/XP etc...

I tried to do it manually, but when connecting it came up with an error to do with the machines using the same IP address or something?

Can anyone give me step by step set-up instructions??

Thanks in advance
Phil

Are you doing it through wi fi or wired ?

If wired are you using a router or just ethernet from the main pc to the laptop ?

sorry...

Ethernet. Crossover cable from PC to laptop.

The wife is on Ebay permanently, and I need to be able to play online poker whilst watching live football in the living room!!

Ok, I am not familiar with 2K but hasnt that got its own network wizard ?

When you run the network wizard on your main pc select the option This computer connects directly to the internet and other pcs connect through this pc.
Select File and Printer Sharing if required.
Just close the wizard at the end.

Run the network wizard on 2K ( it must have one as even ME had its own).
Select the option, This computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway or other computer.
Select File and Printer Sharing if required.

Make sure that both the laptop and the pc have the same workgroup name, usually MSHOME.

Check that you can see both pcs in View Network Computers from each pc.
If you cant see both then temporarily disable the firewalls on both pcs.
If you can then see them you need to configure the firewall for ICS and/or file sharing.

Managed to get it going. It appears there's not a wizard on Win2K!

Got the necessary info from here....http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_2000

Thanks for your help

Strange that 2K hasnt got a wizard, maybe because its for more professional applications than the average home user would use, although XP pro has a wizard  :?

At least you managed to sort it, sorry I couldnt help you with it.
