Microsoft may offer cheap copies of new operating system Vista in a bid to get people to upgrade.

Although Vista has been beset with delays and is now not expected until January at the earliest, Microsoft bosses have told US media that the company is in talks with PC makers and computer retailers about possible promotions.

The company is staying tight-lipped about details, and a UK spokesperson told Web User: ?We have no details about the offer to share at this time.?

The release of Vista will see the first major upgrade to Microsoft's operating system since Windows XP in 2001, however, its development has been slowed as the company works out bugs.

The spokesperson said: ?Microsoft is targeting Windows Vista availability for volume license customers [business users] in November 2006 and general availability in January 2007, although the exact delivery date will be subject to achieving quality metrics based on customer feedback.?
