I've always found Sony to be expensive and unreliable.  They seem to suffer from spontaneous combustion.  >:(

I have to say, I have used Sony AV equipment for years, and have never had any real problems.  I have always found the equipment to be reliable, robust, and of good quality.

When I worked in the television industry Sony had a very high rating for quality and reliability, but it seems to have slipped quite a bit.

sony =  hardware DRM so I never buy anything with Sony on it... though they really have f***ed up with DRM on their consoles...
