Google goes back to basics
« on: April 20, 2007, 14:01 »
Search giant Google has scrapped the name Froogle for its product finding service.

The original name was a pun on the word 'frugal', but Google has become dissatisfied with it because people did not understand what the service was for. Instead, it will be renamed Google Product Search.

"The name caused confusion for some because it doesn't clearly describe what the product does," said Marissa Mayer and Jeff Bartelma on the Google blog.

As well as renaming the service, Google is refreshing the interface with the aim of making it easier for people to find the products they want online.

"We're taking the opportunity to refocus the user experience on providing the most comprehensive, relevant results in a clean, simple, easy-to-use user interface," said Mayer and Bartelma.

Google also recently launched Google Checkout, a service similar to PayPal, in the UK in an attempt to make purchasing products online simpler for surfers.

How boring! Surely its down to marketing the name - people wouldn't have known what Google was at the beginning.

Since they're corporate now, they have to justify themselves to their stockholders.
