Move docs and settings to new drive
« on: August 18, 2007, 13:00 »
Hi All,

My desktop pc is quickly running out of hard disk space and so I'm looking to install another drive (as D:) into the pc.

How easy is it to move the documents and settings folder onto the new drive, and make windows always look at D: in the future for documents and settings.

Is it easy also to move larger programs to the new drive - or does that mean uninstall and reinstalling.

Another option - is it possible to clone the C:\ drive (I have trueimage) and then move everything to the new drive and take out the old drive?

Suggestions welcome

Thanks, DJ

The cloning option is your best bet as you can move the documents and stuff easily enough but you cant always change the default path for future automatic save to etc.

Ok, so is it just a case of installing the True Image software on drive C: taking a clone and asking it to 'extract' the clone to drive d: then taking out the C drive?

Whats the best way of doing it?  I also have an extranal USB drive that might be useful (Clone C to external, swap in new drive, extract onto new C??)

Thanks, DJ.

You need to install the cloning software on the current drive.
You then save the image to another drive, either internal or external or even to DVDs.
If you have a large enough second internal hard drive you can partition it and save the image to the second partition but you must have it saved somewhere that allows you to restore it back to a hard drive ie not on the same partition.
The program usually makes a bootable floppy or a CD.

Set the drive that you want the image to be restored to as the master and then boot from whichever bootable media you created and then find the image and tell it where to restore it to.

Then when you reboot you should be in a working windows OS exactly the same as it was when you created the image.

Hope I have expalined that in easily understandable steps  :)

Yep cheers,

I'm not going to get access to the PC for a few weeks - so will let you know how it all goes.

Thanks Sandra

Well I finally got access to the PC and its all worked.

The only problem is that the PC only allows one hard drive to be installed (and I didn't have a ribbon cable with me to link up another), so had to move image to a USB drive, boot from USB then move onto new hard drive.

Thanks Sandra for your help

Cheers, DJ.

Pleased it worked.

I came across a pc recently with only a single drive IDE cable, seems ridiculous in these days  ::)
