decreasing size of photos.
« on: June 20, 2009, 16:58 »
I tried to upload a photo in a website, couldn't do it as they said photo was too large. The photo is 640x480
130KB. They want no larger than 61k.
How can I make my photos smaller when taking pics and once they are saved in documents? I currently am windows XP if that means anything. Thanks.

Do you have any photo editing software on the PC, Sharon?  It should just be a case of resizing, or resampling the image to the required size.

Hey Simon...thanks for coming back to help me. Ok...here's the deal I don't know a whole lot about software, but..I did go to my programs and found a heading for "Advanced Photo Editor", didn't even know it was there, don't know how it got there. So..I opened it and did find resize, and brought in the pic I wanted to make no larger than 61K as it is 130K. All it has is height and width to resize. Can you recommend a good software program I can download or even buy...that is not that difficult to use. Thanks

You could probably do it with what you've got, Sharon.  You need to reduce the size by about half, so if you reduce the height and width by half, that should do it, as that will also reduce the file size.

You also have a basic editor in the default Windows picture viewer software.  Just right click the image and select Edit.

I use Adobe, but I've heard good reports about something called Infran View (I think!), which is free.  It should pop up on Google if you search for Free Image Editor, but I'll find it for you when I get back on my PC later.

Just another thought, you can sometimes reduce the file size by saving it as a different file type, so, if it's a jpeg, say, try saving it as a gif or png, in the editing software.

Here's the link to IrfanView:  http://www.irfanview.com/

There's also GIMP, which is free as well:  http://www.gimp.org/
