District 9
« on: August 17, 2009, 23:38 »
I went to watch District 9 the otherday (jam packed Canadian cinema) and it was bloody great! The best scifi film I've seen in a while (maybe the last Star Trek beats it - but this is scifi with a link to real issues). If you fancy watching something that's well put together with an intriguing storyline, some action and overall a good film then I'd suggest this. See http://www.d-9.com/ for the trailer.

Biggest box office hit in America apparently Simon.
I read a report about it on sunday.

Quote
District 9 made a triumphant invasion of North American theaters, pulling in an otherworldly $37 million (according to early studio estimates) and winning the weekend by outgrossing the previous box-office champ, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, by nearly $15 million.

I'm glad you enjoyed it more than I enjoyed the last film I saw - Harry Potter and the Half Baked Plot.

I can't stand Harry Potter films but I'm an old grump anyway.   ;D

I love the Harry Potter stories, especially the audio books read by Stephen Fry, but the only filmed version worth watching is Prisoner of Azkaban.  I'm hoping against hope that the final films are more faithful to the book's storyline.

I've enjoyed the HP series, but wasn't all that impressed by the last film (Order of the Phoenix).  I was hoping HBP would be better.

The HBP film doesn't have the subtleties of the book in describing the main characters' unfolding love lives and it deviates from the storyline quite considerably.  The books have a lot of plot and fitting them into a feature length film is always going to be difficult.  Nevertheless, HBP focussed on the rom-com elements of the story and excluded critical elements such as the Gaunt family and an explanation of why Harry had to return to the Dursleys' each summer.  The ending achieves the same result as the book, but deviates unnecessarily.  If you have read and enjoyed HBP, you won't be impressed by the film version.
