Topic: Vista and Windows 7 usage

I have two pc's both running windows XP. Several months ago I purchased an upgrade to Vista from the Microsoft store. The offer included a free copy of Windows 7 when it became available.
I spoke with a member of the store staff who told me that I could use both upgrades for both my pc's.
Vista on one and Windows 7 on the other, so I bought it.
I have the downloaded both and will shortly be upgrading both pc's. Since then I  have wondered if I had been
told the truth. If I upgraded one pc from xp to vista then the other from xp to Windows 7 would the vista licence
go.? Has any one here done it.
I understand that if you upgrade, the licence on that upgraded pc(XP) will go.
Your comments would be most welcome.

Someone will correct me if this is wrong, but I don't think you can upgrade from XP to Windows 7 without doing a 'clean' install, unlike upgrading from Vista, which you can do without losing your data.

Further, I believe it's one licence, one machine, so unless you have two separate licenses for Vista and Windows 7, then I think you will only be able to use the Windows 7 disc to upgrade the existing Vista installation.

I know about Windows 7 installation. Both vista and Windows 7 have seperate licence numbers and were downloaded several months apart.

If each have individual licences, then there should be no reason why you can't use them on separate machines.

I tend not to agree, Simon. Without seeing the EULA, I can't be sure, but my instinct says that the Win7 upgrade is tied to the Vista licence, so should not be used on a separate machine.

Presumably, if that's the case, it would complain of an invalid licence when attempting to upgrade the XP machine?
