Phone Sync Problem
« on: November 05, 2010, 23:25 »
I think this is a PC issue, so I'll post it here.  An Admin can move it if they like.  ;D

An 'interesting' sync problem has developed on my computer.  I usually sync two phones simultaneously with Outlook, but this evening, my iPhone 3GS was 'not recognised' by Windows XP, and no amount of changing USB socket, rebooting, disconnecting, reconnecting, seemed to help.

By chance, I swapped the USB port the iPhone is connected to, to the that my HTC HD2 was connected to, and hey presto, the iPhone synced, and all was working again.  However, when I reconnect the HD2 to any USB port, the iPhone disappears from iTunes, and when I reconnect, it's again, 'not recognised'.  How can this be?  The HTC HD2 syncs with ActiveSync, and the iPhone with iTunes.  I used to be able to have both phones connected, power up the PC, and both phones would sync without any trouble.  Can anyone shed any light on this?

Not useful but USB can be a right pain in the ar$e and rationalising problems associated with it usually ends in a headache.
you could try the static discharge procedure i.e. turn off power tp pc but leave it plugged in (if possible) and hold down the ON button for 30 seconds.
This has worked for me in the past as it sometimes knocks sense into errant usb connections. Worth a try .

I've never heard of that trick, Dave.  Worth a try.  It seems to be a USB conflict somewhere, as it happens whichever USB ports I use for each device.

This shouldn't be the case, but:

If DVD/CDs become ‘lost’, code 39 error “Windows cannot load the driver. The driver may be missing or corrupted (Code 39)”.

Go to Device Manager, uninstall CD & DVD drivers. Uninstall Primary and Secondary IDE channels under IDE/ATAPI Controllers - ignore requests to re-boot machine.

Go to Regedit, navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Look for the key which refers to DVD/CD-ROM drives. Delete the subkey UpperFilters, also LowerFilters if it is present.

Re-boot the machine. All should now be well.

Not sure if that's it, Rik, but thanks.  Nothing seems to have been 'lost', it's just that the two devices work individually, but not together.

Does it work if you just connect one phone at a time?
