Topic: Supernova...

if you haven't already seen it tonight might be a good chance to see a supernova - look for the Pinwheel Galaxy in Ursa Major (the one with the Plough in)... we went out last night and took some pictures: http://www.krioma.net/blog/2011/09/supernova_in_ursa_major.php

If it's clear I'll have a telescope on it tonight but unless you know how to find the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) it's going to be very hard to locate.  The BBC were recommending binoculars but really!  It's far below naked eye visibility,and, let's face it, you need a very powerful pair of binoculars such as my 11 x 80's.  This has been hyped up out of all proportion in my opinion.  Best thing is to find a local amateur astronomy society and ask when they are having an observation session.

yeah probably the last option is the best, I was going to go out with my bins last night but all my time was taken taking the image before the clouds came in.

oh we made a colour image too a couple of days later - not the best but not too shabby - stupid dust on the lens messed up the dynamic range though:
