External HDD failure
« on: August 23, 2014, 12:55 »
Hello Pals

A Toshiba external HDD that I have has stopped working.
I believe the circuit inside has failed, the disk is still spinning, no strange noises, I have tried another cable and I have tried it on two other laptops.

It appears on 'disk manager'. I can't assign a letter and it can't be started.

I happen to have a 'carrier', I think that's what it's called, which successfully used a HDD from an old laptop.

My question is, will the drive in the Toshiba work on the carrier?

Cheers
If it works, don't fix it

My guess is, the only way to find out is to try it.  :)

Thanks Simon

I did it, and it works.
I saved my 1TB drive ;D
It looks like it was the little circuit board connected to the drive. That was just a push fit and came off easily.
I then connected the circuit that came with the carrier.
The carrier cost about six quid three years ago.

I've read a few articles and seen some videos basically saying 'bin it'.
I've proved them wrong.

Cheers!
