Probs with accessing sites with aol
« on: June 10, 2003, 19:16 »
My friend has just got aol today and has never used the net before. She can access everything on aol but when she wants to go to other sites it is not letting her. She gets an error message saying to refresh so it's not authenticating. I know it can be fixed in the settings but I can't remember how. Does anyone else know?

Have a look in TOOLS,INTERNET OPTIONS,and then ADVANCED Whiskas,go to ENABLE INTEGRATED WINDOWS AUTHENTIFICATION under the Security part towards the bottom of the options and tick it.It will need rebooting to enable it  :-*

She tried the aol browser first and then tried microsoft IE but had the same prob with both, she definitely went into the advanced tab and scrolled down to security the other options under that are there apart from that one

Hi Whiskas

Somebody had the exact same problem elsewhere with AOL and tried this and it sorted it  :)

Open up IE. go to tools, internet options.
click on connection tab, then make sure you have it set to " never dial a connection " then click on LAN settings button at bottom.
Make sure you do NOT have any check marks in this window at all.
Click on OK, OK and OK.
Close your IE window.
Open up a new one and you should be able to access the internet again.

Hope this of some help

Has your friend got young children able to access her PC Whiskas?
If not she could try altering the security settings in the tools, options bit to see if that enabled it  ???

We tried the parental controls first off but that didn't make any difference

I have had another search about and it is possible apparently that it could be a firewall problem. Does AOL software come with it's own firewall  ???
If it does it may be worth checking the settings on it  :)

I spent some time this afternoon and it looks to me like its an IE fault(reinstall or repair IE ? ) or the security and privacy settings in the TOOLS,OPTIONS bit.
Whiskas to verify if its AOL or not could she just set it up on a different ISP to check that its definately AOL and not IE itself where the problem lies?
There are lots of PAYG Isps that dont need to have all the installation stuff (like AOL and FREESERVE) set up just to get on the net with  :)

Which version of Internet Explorer is on this PC Whiskas?

It may be worth upgrading to IE6 :-\
