DETECT NEW HARDWARE.... shortcut?
« on: August 22, 2003, 15:16 »
In XP, if you go to the device manager, you can "scan for new hardware", ie if I've just plugged a new hard drive in my caddy to the system without restarting.

If you've not used this feature already, it's very nice.

Does anyone know if you can create a desktop shortcut icon for this?

I've been meaning to ask this for ages!!!

Thanks.

nope sorry... this is the only known way (to me) to do what I want to do. well there is another way ... basically the same.

Windows Flag Key and Pause/Break --> Brings up System Properties.
Click Hardware Tab, select Device manager.
RMB your SYSTEM ROOT, select SCAN FOR NEW HARDWARE.

Its not really that long, but I do a lot of caddy shifting each day.

http://www.geocities.com/deonvdw/RescanHardware.htm

This is a program someone has made... in VB I presume. Looks very simple.

I also found the run command somewhere, call a DLL with various parameters.

It works for IDE.

Because XP overrides the BIOS, you should be able to detect any hotplug item, SCSI, IDE... possibly COM port items too.
