Who's yer Daddy?
« on: November 01, 2003, 21:09 »
...or more precisely, who were your Grand-parents?

If you know the name of your Grand-parent, place of birth and year, you can obtain a copy of their birth certificate after searching for it here.  And never overlook variant spellings!

While a Birth cert is certain to provide you with cool stuff like the occupations of the child's parents. it could also open a can of worms - so beware!

Once you have your Granddad's birth cert, it shouldn't be too difficult to work your way back up the tree to 1837, when civil registration was first introduced.  Just don't come crying to me if your name is 'Smith'.

I'm stuck at 1735.  Any help would be appreciated.   ;D

I've gone back as far as 1680 with a couple of lines on my mother's side but that's as far back as I will ever get as there is a big gap in the records which is impossible to bridge.  I've got the records going back to around 1550 and there are undoubtedly names of even earlier ancestors contained in them but I could never be certain of the correct lineage with those missing 20 years.

Thats good clive - I've got back to 1863 - my mothers, mothers, mothers, mother. A very interesting line. I've got stuck there though, I found where she lived when she was 16 on the census thing but she was a maid so I can't find out who or where her parents were and with a name like Griggs its tricky  ::)

Does FreeBMD (see link above) not have her marriage cert, Shell?  That would give the name of her father, thus making the search for her birth a bit easier.

Thats very interesting Rodders, good idea. I've been having a look but nothing yet, unless I have her middle name wrong, I'll have to have a look in my files.
