well, to be honest i have no idea where this would go

anyway, does anyone know how to move a files physical location on a hard drive? cause i'v got a bunch of files at the end of my hard driver that i need to move to partition the drive.

Not sure if I understand the question -- can you not just cut and paste or drag and drop?

First of all defragment your drive a couple of times. This will consildate your files and reset the free space list.

Then copy (not move) the files you need to move to another (temporary) folder. Make sure the files have copied correctly.

You can then delete the original files.

Then move the copied files back to the original folder.

The files will now be in a different physical postion on the hdd. But of course there is no guarantee as to where they will go

I think he means that the files he is talking about are on the outskirts of the Hard Drive Disk therefore they take longer to find etc.

Have you tried Perfect Disk? It's a defragger that moves all your used files to the middle of the disc and all the files you don't use much to the edges. Which I've tried and there is a smaller seek time

No Robo, what Measter means is that he has some files at the end of his drive which are preventing him from being able to use partition manager software such as Partion Magic to split one partition into two.

Your Perfect Disk solution is correct though

all i know is that there are some files there. i have no idea what files they are.

I would guess that they are your Swap file.  Occassionally (but not very often) I delete mine, by starting my computer at the c:\ prompt and typing

del c:\windows\win386.swp

Then switch of at the power, switch back on and the Swap file will rebuild itself.

A word of caution, it is not recommended to delete the Swap file.  Having said that, it has never caused me any problems.

Windows system writes files to certain locations the hard drive and are not movable but they are generally at the beginning of the drive. It could be the swap file/virtual memory or just a file in use by a program

Partition magic should be able to create a new partition as it works in DOS without windows being loaded

what i'v decided to do is backup anything i want to keep, then partition the drive then see if anythings wrong. if something is wrong then i'll just format and reinstall windows.

just so ya'll know, i'v resized the partition wiht only i minor problem. which was those files at teh end of the drive, which as far as i can tell were only drivers for some hardware. which windows pomptly sorted out.

anyway, i'm now downloading linux to install in the unformatted space. it's 3 650 - 700 mb files. so that'd be around 9 hours of total downloading, and i'v done 2 of the files. just another 5 - 6 hours and i'll probably be posting on here from within linux on my favorite browser(firefox).

Linux likes to be installed on the root of C: just make sure you know what you are doing when you install of you could loose a

i'm currently on linux now, though i have no idea whatsoever how to install something, so i'm stuck with mozilla 1.4 instead of firefox. i like the fuzzy clock
