i need help
« on: February 28, 2004, 23:02 »
ok i admit it, i need help.

my start menu and task bar have frozen and i have tried everything i can think of to fix it.

i have scanned for virus's (found some?trojans), scanned for spyware and got rid of some.  I seem to have gotten rid of everything that shouldnt be there but cant get the task bar to unfreeze or access anything from my start menu.

It seems to start up ok then freezes halfway through so i have tried to omit programmes from running on startup but that hasnt helped.

Please help me fix this problem

Hi Lin and  :welcome:  One of our techies will try and help you when they come online, but meanwhile I suggest that you start your PC in safe mode and try a system restore back to when your system was working properly. If this doesn't work there's a possibility your OS could be damaged. In safe mode, try running a scandisk check and see if it finds anything. Then try a virus scan in safe mode. Also, check your bootlog file, (C:\bootlog.ini) to see if there is a lock-up or problem when your system is booting or shutting down. If all else fails I would try an OS repair on XP.

thanks for that, i tried running it in safe mode and it seems to work fine in that, task bar and start menu anyway.  but i cant seem to copy that over to regular mode.

In both safe mode and normal mode I have run AVG virus and spybot search and destroy and ad aware programmes and there were some trojans and some spyware which have all gone now, but i still cant get my task bar to work properly.

Any more ideas would be gratefully received, and the simpler the terms the better.

Thanks

I am running windows xp pro BTW.

Lin Hi...  :)

Which spyware prog are you using? My pages were all over the place the other day and had to run Adaware 2wice and also had to run HJ log...and delete some from there............but HJ log is for the more experienced techies  :D

Hi Lin,

If you download and run a thing called Hijack This, then copy the log file to Notepad, and paste it into a post on here, someone might be able to spot something.  Occasionally, a particularly clingy bit of spyware / adware seems to even be immune to the usual removal tools, but Hijack This should uncover it.

 :)

Simon..there must be a warning with an HJ log on not to delete anything before any techies say so, it can be dangerous if not  :-\ and to always back up everything 1st  ;) can never be to careful.
