pop up stoppers
« on: March 03, 2004, 12:17 »
ok, after fixing my other problems, I seem to be getting more pop ups than I used to.  (Some of which i would not want any kids to see, without being to graphic, unlike the websites they are for)

My question is, what is the best way for me to stop them?  Which is the best/easiest pop up stopper that i can get.  I do have one from panicware, but that obviously isnt doing its job properly.

BTW great site, I still love it
 ;D

The Panic Ware one isnt bad Lin, have you looked in the settings for how to make it more "aggressive" ?

Another thing you could do Lin, is to download Mozilla and use that as your browser instead of IE6.  You won't get any pop-ups at all on that.  Mozilla is very popular on this forum and after using it for the past few weeks I can tell you that everything about it is good.  It will even make you less vulnerable to viruses.  You can use it alongside IE6 if you wish to keep them both.

I have both Moz and Opera (my preferred browser) on my system, and I would recommend them both.  Opera has slightly better privacy tools (one click to clean your tracks) but shows an advertising banner, unless you pay to register, ;)while Moz is slightly smoother in use and seems to download pages faster.

If you really want to stick with Microsoft's pre-medieval, patched-up offering, I believe the Avant browser shell has a built-in popup stopper.  However, as I avoid Internet Explorer like the plague, I cannot tell  you how effective it is.

wow, you lot are quick.

I post a question, go to work and when i come home there are loads of replies.

I havent looked at the settings recently but will do that now.

ok, what exactly is Mozilla, and where would i get it if i wanted it.  I have only ever used internet explorer (dont know which number at the moment).  Is it loads of hassle to download and set up?

Thanks

Mozilla is a non Microsoft version of IE6 and has lots of better features.  Most websites look identical on both browsers.  It's just as easy to use and is a fairly quick download.  You can import all your favourites into it so you don't have to search for them all over again.

Click on Simon's Mozilla logo in his post above and it will download.  We promise that there is nothing to be scared of.

If you go for Mozilla, there are a couple of other things you will need.  One is the Flash plug in (to display animated graphics like the sigs on PC Pals), and another is IE View, which allows you to right click any webpage in Mozilla, and switch to Internet Explorer to view it.  This is handy for the odd troublesome website, which refuses to work in anything other than IE.  There will always be someone here to help out if you get stuck, as we have quite a few Mozilla converts now.  It really is much better and more secure than IE, and you won't get any pop ups!  See download links below.  :)

I use Mozilla Firefox. This is a standalone browser, which dosent include e-mail, as I like using Outlook for my mail. This is basically  Mozilla. It is fast and includes Log In Manager to remember your passwords. It is available from either C/Net or Mozilla site direct. Ive forgotten what a pop up looks like! If you want to use I.E. the best stop up popper ive found is Google Tool Bar.

 ;) ;)
