Norton utilities?
« on: March 13, 2004, 19:37 »
You know the Norton System check wizard.

would you always correct the mistakes it says it finds? cos it keeps finding loads on mine lol

I corrected the first registry things it said, but its found more this time, I do have a few problems (but thats another story)  ;D Now it says I have 22 more invalid entries, so should I always correct these problems?

 :-\

Also what is DotNetInstaller it says it can't find the dll to run it?

Out of all the things I've lost .......I miss my mind the most!!

DotNetInstaller sounds like spyware to me, but I could well be wrong.  Have you done Ad Aware and Spybot scans, Michelle?

The Norton Utilities One Button Checker is what you're referring to, yes?  Well, usually it just picks up invalid registry entries and shortcuts on mine.  These are usually left behind from programs you have uninstalled.  I always let it fix everything, and never had a problem.

Michelle, I use Norton Utitlities a lot and it has saved my life on a few occasions. :D. That Dotnetinstaller.exe file you are talking about, I had it too and norton said it could not fix it. I did a search and found it on my hard drive and deleted it. I haven't had any bad effects from doing so. I always tell Norton to repair all and have never had any problems after doing so.  :)

Found some info here on the Symantec site

Quote
Error: "Missing file: 'C:\ . . . \DotNetInstaller.exe' cannot access a necessary file . . ." after running WinDoctor

Situation:
You see the following message after you run a WinDoctor diagnostic scan from within Norton SystemWorks:

Missing file: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0700\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe" cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll."

Solution:
This message can safely be ignored. InstallShield is not really trying to use the file DotNetInstaller.exe without .NET Framework being installed. The DotNetInstaller.exe file is merely cached in the engine location for future use.

Follow the steps below to ignore the problem reported in WinDoctor.

To prevent Norton WinDoctor from repairing the problem

Open Norton WinDoctor.
If the Norton WinDoctor Wizard does not start automatically, then in the main Norton WinDoctor window, click Scan.
In the Norton WinDoctor Wizard window, select "Perform all Norton WinDoctor tests (recommended)."
Click Next.
When WinDoctor has finished checking your system, click Next to examine the results.
Click Finish.
In the main Norton WinDoctor window, click the Problems button.
Under Problems Found, click the problem for the missing file, mscoree.dll.
Right-click the problem for the missing file, then click Problem Details.
Under Details, right-click the entry you want ignored, then click "Ignore Selected Problem."
Click Repair All > Yes to continue.
Exit Norton WinDoctor.

Each time you run Norton WinDoctor, this problem is ignored.

Technical Information:
InstallShield installs DotNetInstaller.exe as part of its engine files, which is a .NET application that is used when a setup is installing .NET assemblies. DotNetInstaller.exe will not work on systems that do not have the .NET Framework, but the file is cached with the InstallShield engine files just in case it is needed in the future when the .NET Framework is installed. WinDoctor recognizes DotNetInstaller.exe as a .NET application that depends on the .NET Framework and reports its findings. WinDoctor's findings are technically correct, but InstallShield always checks for the Framework before trying to use it.

What a long winded explanation, Hookstar. Do you not realise Michelle is blonde. Going into search and finding the file and deleting it is a much easier solution.  :P

Ah, so it's Norton Win Doctor, not the One Button Check.  Useful info, Hook.   :)

I think that you have to bear in mind that if you run Norton's Windoctor on a brand new installation of Windows that it will find approximately 200 errors.  Trust me, I know these things.   8)  I think that puts everything into perspective and that you shouldn't worry too much about it continually finding new faults.  Whenever you delete a file it will report an invalid shortcut.  Yipeeeee!

Unlike Lona, I have never found it to correct any faults on my machine and they always have to be corrected by some other means.  I confess to running it once every month or so, and even let it "correct" everything.  But I don't really take too much notice of what it's doing as I think it's all mouth and no trousers.

I kind of agree - these 'disc doctor' type utilities are all well and good, but your PC was probably working fine before you installed it and it discovered hundreds of errors.  If you hadn't got Norton Utilities, the 'errors' would still be there, and you wouldn't be worrying about them!   ;)

In my opinion, that Wind Doctor is absolute rubbish -- I still keep blowing the duvet off.   :-X

I use mine regularly and let it fix any errors and I dont seem to have half the problems that people who dont run it have.
A friend of mine was getting all sorts of problems after his pc was running ok for about 8 weeks, after I built it for him and I said have you run windoctor ?
He hadnt, he ran it and it fixed a couple of hundred faults and has run fine since, nuff said  ;)

I agree with Sandra . I run Norton Win Doctor at least once a weeek and find it invaluable. My PC runs a lot faster after getting rid of all the c--p. Also when you reinstall Windows it does find about 200 problems, but in view of the amount of files involved in installing an operating programme, it is no wonder that a few get messed up in the installation.

Right, can someone tell me, does Norton Win Doctor do the same as the One Button Check?

isn't it a case of; If "one Button ChecK" cannot fix any problems it finds, you then go to the Doctors Surgery Simon  ;D

Edit: Just run Doc Simon, 11 invalid short cuts, cannot fix, yet One Button Scan said everything was Cushtie  ;D
