Hi ambers and  :welcome:

I'm not a techie but a good start is to install Ad-aware and run it is safe mode and make sure you have the windows critical updates too  8)

Hopefully a techie will be along soon to add to this  :thumb:

P.S. If your pc keeps shutting down every few minutes you may have the Blaster virus and the removal tool and instructions are here

was the XP install a clean install or an upgrade from what?

Did you experiance problems from the word go of the install, ie: before you connected to the Web?

What are the symptons your PC is displaying ?

It could be driver issues, it could be virus infection, but without telling us what the symptons are, we may wrongly diagnose your PC as being pregnant  ::)

Hi Cam,Hi Tony,The problems were (to start with) the blaster worm which I got rid of.And it only starts giving problems once you go online!.The winxp pro was a copy so windows update doesnt give me updates for it,but I downloaded as much as I could using my Stable pc lol and installed them.I have three friend's who have the same problems, but they havent looked any further into whats wrong.I just dislike being beat lol. I'm going to boot it up once more and try to see if I can find an explanable explanation of just what's going on in there lol.I turned it off on Saturday and havent went back near it as I was loosing my sanity :o...
I'll be back! lol

Hi AmberZ.
Are you saying that you havent even got the original SP1 installed  ???
That fixed a lot of problems with XP.
If the problems only happen after going on line then it sounds as if some of the security updates arent installed.
I would persevere with XP or get 98SE rather than put ME on if it came to the worst :doggie:

Well, it seems to me that your copy (with the copies of your friends) is not a correct copy. It has problems in it probably.

You may want to do an internet search for something like "Change windows XP key". Then, if you were lucky enough to have a valid key - and not search for one on such places as astalavista.com - you might be sucessful in getting it all nice and stable ;)

Actually the only update you can't do on-line is the service pack1 - if you deselect it from the critical updates then you can install the rest. Or so I've heard - actually all my machines have legal copies (and a complete pain to activate).
hey promised the earth! Then delivered mud.
Technically it did meet the spec.

Out of all the things you are really going to buy, instead of using copies, buy XP!!! Its less than £80 now. Still a bit of an expense, but worth it for trouble free computing.

SP1 will only install with a legit key. Find one somewhere. Use a key changer. Do what you need to do! If you don't have SP1, then things will never get better.

Windows ME is one of the worst versions of Windows ever to plague this fair world... IMO.

Uncle Bill, being the nice chap he is, gives you a serial number when you buy XP, this allows you to install and run XP for a varying number of days depending on which version of XP you have.
Before this time expires you have to "Activate" it or it stops working and wont allow you to start windows.
You do this either online or by telephone where you get another serial number to enter which then makes it a fully functional version  :)
