Modem problem
« on: December 14, 2002, 15:39 »
A friend in my local astronomical society is having modem problems.  He is unable to obtain a connection as the modem refuses to dial out.  Last night I suggested that he went into Internet options/ connections to see if the setting had changed to "never dial a connection" as that used to happen a lot with 2 of my previous machines, preventing them from dialling out.  However, the setting is "always dial a  connection".

He has bought a new phone cable to connect the modem to the phone socket but to no avail.  He's opened up the computer and checked that the modem connections are sound so he now thinks he may have a faulty modem.  Before he changes it, can anyone think of any other reason for his problem, or any other test he could perform?

I had this happen once, and it turned out that there are two sockets on the modem, and my phone line was plugged into the wrong one, after I had been messing about with things.

Tell your friend to plug his phone line into the other socket, Clive, and see if that does the trick.   :)

The first check he should do Clive is go to the phone dialler and put his mobile number in to see if it rings that.If I remember correctly go to : Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications/Phone Dialler
This will confirm that his modem is actually connected and configured correctly to his PC.After that he will have to check his DUN connection as normally.Probably best to set a new one up on an 0845 number to eliminate problems with his exsisting ISP ( Plusnets dial up is a quick easy one to set up to check with) :-*

Clive

Have him make a copy of all his connection details, phone numbers and non-standard settings etc

Then create a new dial up and set this as default, give that a try, if it works delete the other dial up.

More often than not, the dial up settings have become corrupted and that prevents the modem from dialing

He only has one connection to his modem and it won't dial out to his mobile so he is going to try making a new DUN connection.  If that fails he is going to bite the bullet and phone his helpline.  But he has promised to let me know how he gets on.

Clive if it wont dial out on phone dialler it is not, repeat, not his DUN at fault  ::)
Is it an internal or external modem?
Somehow it has either packed up or is not set up right to his PC.Is it showing as working ok in properties of Device Manager or Modem in control panel ?
I would delete the modem from inside device manager and reboot to see if it installs it correctly next time.If it cant use phone dialler it definitely cant connect to a DUN  :-*

I'll phone him again tomorrow Sandra.  He's only an intermittent user so there is no urgency, but it would be nice to help him solve it.

It's an internal Rockwell modem and he's using Win 95.  I've told him to delete it from Device Manager and reboot and then get back to me.

He took his modem in to PC World and they told him it was kaput. He's bought a new one for £29 but the last I heard was that he hasn't yet installed it.  Oh, this guy's name is Hugh.  ;D

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm St Adept?   ;D  ;D

No Sandra, this Hugh lives in Aberkenfig which a few miles away from me.  He's an electrical engineer (retired ;D) so he's pretty handy with a screwdriver.  ;D
