CD Writer
« on: March 11, 2004, 00:39 »
My cd-writer is acting up and I'm not sure what's wrong. It will burn a few discs then it just stops recognising that there is a disc in the drawer. The disc is always very hot when I remove it. If I shut down and wait half an hour, then reboot, writer works ok. What could be causing this?

I found that when CDs start coming out extra warm (they are usually warmish after burning), the drive is usually on the way out.   :(

As Simon says Lona it sounds as though its on the way out I had one which did what yours is doing and it finally died. Now buried in the back garden next to the old monitor that succumbed as well. :-\

Lona,

Does the drive also disappear in "My Computer"? That happened to me on a PC running ME, installed W2K, same thing. Also, when you put a CD in the drive, the PC locked up. It was only a bog standard CD-Rom, I then installed my CR-RW 32x12x24 in to that PC, problem solved.

So I sold that drive for a tenner, and bought a nice new shiny fast Samsung Drive 52x32x52, £26.95 with carrage includes Nero V5.5 software.

Go on treat yourself, as it sounds to me like your writer is on the way out.

Tony

My drive doesn't disappear from my computer but when I click on the drive with a disc in drawer it says "insert disc" but not every time. As regards buying a new writer, would such a fast one be compatible with my P111, 1ghz speed PC?

I don't think that would be a problem, Lona.   :)

Lona,

new writer will be OK on your system, is the writer as old as the PC ? have you tried reinstalling the writer software? I'm just of the opinon, when kit like that acts up, and taking into consideration it's age and it's speed. For ball park £26 you can save yourself alot of hassle, and have a fast writer to boot.

DVD's hold lots more data, Ketamininja. If I have to replace might as well buy dvd writer as I would probably want one at a later date anyway.
