internet slower with music on it
« on: June 21, 2004, 00:50 »
Hi, I am not that knowledgeble about computers when it comes to the more in depth tasks so I apologize if my question is sort of stupid. It does not seem to matter what type of internet I have (Cable or 56k) it always gets alot slower whenever I download music and gets progressivly worse as time goes on. I have tried not having the music programs on my computer and the internet runs better so I am certain that is the problem. I have an anti-virus system and it does not seem to be doing much. The system does not need to be defragmented, disk clean up ect. so I don't know what to do. I have had to uninstall windows and reinstall everything every three months after the internet becomes almsot inoperable. Does anyone know of any program that I may have overlooked or something that I am not doing. It may be obvious to some people but to me it is not because as I have said I don't really understand a whole  lot about computers so anything you reply will be appreciated. It does not get slower while I download music but after and when the music program is not running.

Hi Jenni and welcome to pc-pals,

As all techies are sleeping now, I may try to get and give some information according to my limited knowledge.

What download program are you using?

Some of those programs have the option to download music which must be ticked among others. Is it the case with you?

Maybe some techies need to know what "Windows" you are using too.

I couldn't understand for sure what program you've ment when you said:

Does that problem happen while you're downloading other stuff (not music), which really would surprise me if not.

If what I mentioned doesn't help, it would be better to wait till someone more qualified shows here.

Good luck...

Hi Jenni, and

As Joudi said, we need to know some more details:

Which version of Windows are you running (98, ME, XP, etc)?

Which software are you using to download the music files?

What is the capacity of your hard drive, and how full is it?

Just to confirm, you are saying the more music that is stored on your hard drive, the slower the PC gets?  What happened when you re-installed Windows?  Did you also put back any music files you had previously downloaded, and what was it like at that stage?

Which anti virus system are you running, and what do you mean by "it doesn't seem to be doing much"?  Is it regularly updated, and have you done a complete system virus scan?

One more!  Are you running any sort of spyware / adware scanner / remover, such as Ad Aware, or Spybot?  If not, it might help to do so, as sometimes, spyware can clog up a system, although this may not be connected to your particular problem.  Links below.

Sorry for all the questions, but hopefully they may help one of our techies solve your problem.

Ad Aware
Spybot S&D
Spyware Blaster
