MS Outlook Problem

I have strated to have a problem viewing pictures that are attached to emails that I receive in MS Outlook 2000

All i get is a box with a red cross in it where the pictures should appear.

Pictures in my Web browser are fine as the problem just seems to be with Outlook.

Have i maybe altered a setting which has caused this problem?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hi Laurence,

It's possible you have set Outlook to read mail in Plain Text only.  I have Outlook 2003, but assuming 2000 is roughly similar, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Preferences.  Click E-mail Options, and then untick the 'Read all standard mail in plain text' check box.  Sorry if that's not precisely where the option is, but it will be there somewhere.

If the picture is embedded, he has to have "HTML view" to view it. If plain text, then you have to save it to your PC first.

try sending an email to yourself with a picture from the web on it - and see the results.

If outlook was "blocking" access (which 2003 does do to certain files) then you should have a message telling you so. This sounds simply like it cannot LOAD the file, ie its maybe not on the web anymore, or the wrong name for the image was inserted.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for trying to help me out.

I checked that I had HTML set for my mail format then cut and pasted a picture form the web into a new email but it appeared as an outline box with the red x in in before I even sent it.

Any ideas?

Can you remember when this started happening, and if there were any changes to your computer immediately prior to this problem?  Any programs installed / uninstalled, any settings changes / updates, virus alerts / removals?  Also, assuming you have Internet Explorer, have you tried in Outlook Express to see if it's the same?

I'm not aware of any obvious changes before the problem first occurred

Pictures are appearing OK in Outlook Express and on the web so the problem just seems to be restricted to MS Outlook

I've just found this, but I'm doubtful it relates to your problem.  Might be worth a look though.  I'm more inclined to think it's a setting somewhere in Outlook, or Internet Explorer.

It souns simelar but closing the email and opening it up again does not fix the problem.

I think you are right about it being a setting in Outlook but I've trawled though the Outlook options and I can't see any that might fix it

Something else here, but again, not the exact thing.  Are you using the Preview Pane?  What happens if you turn it off?

Found something in Outlook 2003, Laurence - not sure if it's the same in O2K, but it might work:  

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Security tab.
 
Under Download Pictures, click Change Automatic Download Settings.
 
Clear the Don't download pictures or other content automatically in HTML e-mail check box.
 
Click OK twice.

here's an interesting one:-

I have just received the email that I composed in Outlook Express and when I opened it in Outlook 2000 the Picture appeared ok

I eved edited the message and added another pic which also appeared fine.

But when I started a new email in Outlook 2000 and pasted in the same pic it's appearing as a red x again

Hi Lawrence and welcome to Pc-pals.  

It could be your firewall settings.  I had a similar problem and had firewall set to exclude animations. Once I unticked that box I could view gifs and jpg.

What firewall are you using?

Good point, Lona, but wouldn't it affect everything if that setting was enabled?

Well blow me...... your right!!!

I disabled my firewall for a minute just to try it out and 'Hey Presto' pictures appeared.

I'll start to go through my firewall settings now to identify what it is that is causing it.
